[thesis] sample works

As I am getting my module arms ready,

I am going to play with them to explore the possibilities of creation. It is not to simply mimic the design, but to explore the general shapes and aesthetics as a way to prove the potential of modular system.
These are the sample chandelier pieces that I would like to explore the design of.
Tord Boontje
This blossom chandelier was a great inspiration for the design of the module arm.

Ingo Maurer
This one is quite innovative modern design as chandelier, and I would like to see how this kind of design would work with my modules.
David Wiseman
This is one of my personal favorites. Very creative and original.

ABC home
Those are the classical designs of chandeliers I want to explore

[thesis] beads

found those gorgeous glass beads at garment district.

basic white + muted grayish blue tone seems to be the theme color for my first chandelier. getting kinda overwhelmed with thinking about chandelier, but at least i am still glad i picked something i love – shopping for beads and hardware parts isn’t too bad. or actually quite fun hah!

[thesis] jellyfish chandelier

i just stumbled upon this awesome chandelier by Gaetano Pesce (thanks Paris!):

this chandelier, “Mediteranneo” was designed after the theme of jellyfish, so it changes colors and moves and even makes scent of ocean! Although i have been trying to disrespect the high-tech chandelier projects, i love this one that it is so witty and brilliant yet so beautiful and elegant!
links about the project:

and the designer Gaetano Pasce is the guy who designed the gigantic version of desk lamp at MoMA . He has bunch more interesting lamp pieces, to name a few, i loved cloud lamp and and moss lamp for they both looked so organic and soft.

‘hover’ by michael gabellini is quite stunning as well!

[thesis] baby bulb + socket

found a tiny (half an inch long) light bulb for a mini socket that takes battery power.
bulbs come in various voltage options, tested 3.7V and 2.4V with 3.3V, 2.4V seemed to be over-burning, 3.7V bright enough even for the test with glass crystals.

seem small enough yet more original and functional than LED.
didn’t work with coincell battery for some reason, will need to look into rechargeable batteries – cell phone battery is always an option, but quite heavy for the use..

[thesis] a couple of observations

a couple of nights ago, this idea struck my half-asleep head: tranformers!
frankly, i rather played with barbie dolls like most of the girls, i had to deal with my big brother playing with his action figures next to me crushing my dolls, invading my doll house and all.
anyway, as i am designing my transformable chandelier, transformers are such a great inspiration for me to think of different iterations of forms out of one figure. Although, transformers are cooler since they can be a robot, a car, a jet, a rocket, and so many more.

[thesis] frame is the key

i have been researching and brainstorming for the design of ‘oh,chandelier’ past weeks,
and i realized one key factor that i haven’t realized the importance of: wire frame!
as i was researching at ABC home, as i was amazed by their gorgeous designs (and price), i realized that some of those actually didn’t have many dangling but simply exposed beautiful wire structure to give clean simple look.

Especially for ‘oh, chandelier’, it will be crucial to design the frame elegantly as it will be exposed as users transform the structure and all.
I am going to experiment with a copper wire to figure out the best solution of structure both for aesthetics and functionality.

[thesis] design vs. art

What’s the difference between art and design?

the mid-20th century American designer Charles Eames says,
“Design is an expression of purpose. It may (if it is good enough) later be judged as art.”
- from the article about Newson’s exhibition at Gagosian gallery

http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/01/21/features/design22.php
Although i am still hesitant to accept design goods as art, his answer seems quite reasonable that it gives time to the judgment.
